Questions which are frequently answered and asked even more frequently than they are answered. They seem stupid at first but still they require frequent answering to prevent frequent stupidity and other forms of frequent human charm which is widely accepted as ‘natural’ phenomenon of our kind. Logistics & Location
Where the hell are you guys located?
Kamp Velebit is situated in a charming little village known as Baške Oštarije. That is exactly half way (20km or 20min ride) between Karlobag and Gospić. We are right by the main road.
How do I get there?
Please don’t try to walk up here (we had that case before) because the main road with steep ascent, absence of sidewalk and exposure to the sun will make your journey miserable and even dangerous. The easiest way to reach is by car, bike or hitchhiking. The local public transportation is quite rare and it mostly operates during high season by Aviva company. Moreover, we do not have confirmed bus schedule for the season before 1st of June. Please contact Velebit Tours (08008885). You can try to catch a ride with us because we frequently run errands in Gospic. If you are hiking Premuzic/Via Adriatica/Via Dinarica trails we are on your way so you can easily reach us.
Is there a phone signal up there?
We are happy to enjoy a good 3G signal almost everywhere in Baške Oštarije. But depending on your hiking plans the situation with signal changes rapidly.
Is there a gas station nearby?
Closest gas stations are located in Karlobag and Gospic. You still don’t drive electric, do you? Shame on you because down in Gospic they also have a charging station for electric cars.
Are there any hiking trails around you?
That’s what our place is all about. There is about 40km of hiking and biking trails around the camp. Just be responsible and do not piss off our guardian angels known as Croatian Mountain Rescue Service.
What’s the temperature and weather like on the top of Velebit?
It can get really cold here even during the summer and we cannot stress this enough. Cloudy and windy weather make a huge difference in temperatures. During the summer the highest is 26 C and the lowest is 10 C. Just go with the famous Norwegian saying: “Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!” which translates to “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes!”
Are there any shops nearby for basic supplies?
The nearest shops are located in Gospic and Karlobag – both are 20min ride away. Most of our guests combine shopping with their daily trips to beaches in Karlobag. In Gospic you can find large supermarkets such as Lidl, Plodine and Konzum. However, there is a dairy shop 1km away from us with milk, yogurt and different sorts of cheese made by local cows. Be sure to taste ‘Basa’ (a cheese spread), Lički Škripavac (Lika’s Squizzing Cheese named because it creates squeezing sound when you chew it) and their famous Stracciatella Yogurt! They are all delicious. UPDATE: the dairy shop has been burned and it will hopefully be renovated this summer.
Amenities & Services
Do you serve any food or drinks at the camp?
Not for now. However, there is a restaurant 1km away from us as a part of the hostel Baske Ostarije. They offer some great local dishes at affordable prices.
Do you have free WiFi on site?
We are proud owners and providers of the Starlink satelite internet service! Before Starlink we were dependant on slow and unreliable connection by landline which costed us many nerves and lost us many customers, especially remote workers. Previously the speed we had was 25 Mbps upload and 1 Mbps download and now thanks to Elon Musk and Starlink we have up to 200 Mbps download and 30 Mpbs upload speed!
Do you have the kitchen available which guests can use?
We have both indoor and outdoor kitchen equipped with cookers and basic utensils, pots, pans etc. You can use our public refrigerators free of charge.
Can I drink water at the campsite?
Our water is perfectly drinkable – it is almost like a spring water because we are first on the supply line.
Do you have refrigerators where we can store our food and drinks?
Yes, there are a couple of refrigerators available for your convenience free of charge.
Is there a laundry service available?
Yes, we have both Wash&Dry service available for 5€ each but you can also hang-dry on your own using fresh mountain air so you pay only 5€ for washing.
Whats included in glamping amenities?
Inside of each glamping unit pillows, warm duvets and bed linen are included in price. We do recommend that you do bring your own sleeping bag just in case you get cold easily especially during off season. We can also povide additional blankets and towels.
What about BBQ and fire, we wanna be firestarters?
Yes of course, we have designated area for camping fire and BBQ. Sometimes we provide wood for burning, sometimes guests pick up wood in surrounding forests but we also have an option to purchase wood for this purpose. Same works for BBQ coal.
Can we empty our chemical or gray water toalet at your camp?
Yes for gray water and no for chemical toalet. Kamp Velebit is proud for its investment in the BIOROCK wastewater treatment system which works by decomposing wastewater through a bacteria. Chemicals from chemical toilets kill these essential bacteria which can undermine the entire system of treatment so only toilets without bacteria may be emptied. We hope to invest in station for emptying chemical toilets but these systems are quite expensive and we are just a small camp. Your best chance for emptying chemical toilets is when you visit some of the larger campsites in Croatia which there are plenty.
House Rules
Is there a lot of noise at the camp?
It all depends on the prevailing and dominant cultural and ethnic background of guests which currently reside at the camp. Balkanians (a.k.a. local species) and species of eastern Europeans including most Mediterraneans are known to be louder than than western Europeans. They often engage in what is known as late night socializing and sometimes they use different instruments and their voices to create music which is boosted by magical drinks such as Travarica, Shlyivovitza, Medica etc. We try to balance things out by enforcing quite hours curfew as a part of our ‘Camping Etiquette’ which begins at 22:00. We also risk our life by doing so on a daily basis. Check this out.
Is smoking allowed?
Yes as long as you don’t puff smoke into other people’s face you may smoke your herbs. However it is forbidden to smoke inside of facilities. And please please please put throw your cigarette buds and roaches into the TRASH and not on the ground. By far the most frequently trash detected around the camp are cigarettes or related to cigarettes (boxes, foils etc.).
Are dogs allowed?
Yes we love dogs and all animals whatsoever Furthermore, dogs get to stay for free here because we think it is ridiculous that camps charge for dogs! They are also allowed to sleep with you inside of our glamping facilities, not on beds of course. However, as an owner you are responsible for controling your pet, keep them leashed while at the premise (unless you are playing) and cleaning up after them. Remember that children play where dogs play so cleaning is mandatory, Check this out. Also if you are a dog owner benefiting from our “free for dogs pricelist” you are kindly invited to participate in picking up poop from other dogs if you detect any or at least report the location to our staff.
